Yosemite upgrade running incredibly slowly. Have Etresoft log.

Problem description:

Since installing Yosemite, my iMac has been running painfully slowly. Apps are very slow to open and Safari is almost unusable. The dreaded spinning wheel is ubiquitous. Reminds me of the Macs of the 90s.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hogs on the OS X system.

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine regularly (due to Google's privacy policies or lack thereof) and I now use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

Thank you. I have deleted the MacKeeper and Blackberry software and things seemed to have improved somewhat. I cannot delete the Netgear or Western Digital software as these provide my wifi and backup functions, respectively. I will also purchase additional RAM as suggested. As speed had never been an issue prior to Yosemite, I hadn't found the need but it is obviously time to consider upgrading.

Although I did not purchase/use MacKeeper beyond the trial, I would like to find an app that will amongst other tasks, enable me to delete duplicate files. Any suggestions that will not cause me headaches?

Thank you. I have deleted both Google Drive and Chrome and speed seems to have improved. I went to Chrome due to the difficulties encountered with Safari as I have found the former to often work faster and better with content-rich/advertising-rich websites. It had always seemed (to me at least) to be a simpler browser and I believe in the "KISS" principle. Of course, I have no idea what Google apps may be doing in the background and I too, suspect the worst! I will try DuckDuckGo.

Yosemite is a resource hog and especially on older macs it won't run well with less than 8GB. If you were to upgrade to 12GB by adding 4x2 I think you would be very happy. Only by ram from either OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/ or Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ cheaper bargain basement brands will only save a few dollars if any and will cause problems.

As far as removing duplicate files I don't recommend software for that, it' subset to do it manually. If you're generating lots of duplicates you might look at your work process to eliminate that. Stay away from any software that claims to clean up, speed up, tune up, optimize or protect your Mac. Without exception they will ALL do the opposite.

Yosemite upgrade running incredibly slowly. Have Etresoft log.
