the application "iTunes" is not open anymore

When i click on an mp3 file from my hard drive i get the error message "the application iTunes is not open anymore" . i am using iTunes 12.2.127 with OS X 10.10.3 and never experienced this before. iTunes is in fact open and used to open when i double clicked an audio file.

Any help is appreciated.

Had this same sort of problem trying to open an mp3 from Finder. Had to quit and restart iTunes to fix it. iTune was definitely in a problematic state as I couldn't get it to respond properly.
