Q: Stand ring not increasing correctly

Today is my first day using Apple Watch, and two times it reminded me to stand up.  So I did.  I walked around for at least 3 minutes. Yet both those hours show up as dark in the stand graph, and I did not get "credit" for them.

Then there was another hour when I was standing/walking for the first half hour.  Then I was in the car, then I was sitting on the couch.  I did not get credit for that hour either.  I thought you only had to stand for one minute out of sixty?!  Or is it one SPECIFIC minute?  It seems to remind me at X:50.  Does it not matter if I was standing from X:01-X:49, if I was not standing for X:50??

Is there a sensitivity/calibration issue?  How does it now if I'm standing?  If I just stand up but don't move, will it know? Or do I need to walk around?

Last question: my stand graph shows blue bars for each hour.  A bright bar if I stood up.  But then there are TWO other colors.  One is solid black.  One is a very faint blue.  Like a shadow.  I thought there was just bright and dark- but now there's this third color. What does that mean?  This seems to imply that I sat still from 1-3 and then 7-9, but that's not true. And why is 7-8 different?

just an update- ever since I wrote this post, it's worked fine.  So..... I have no idea what the problem is/was.  (but now I have a question about the green exercise ring, so i'm starting a new post)

I was having the issue where the Apple Watch wouldn't recognize times that I would stand in the Activity app.  After trying everything, I finally reset the watch ("Erase all content and settings" in the iPhone Watch app).  After re-pairing up the watch (as a new device) the watch hasn't messed up once in recording "Stand" data.  Give it a shot...

At the very this makes me think that the problem is a software one which can be fixed with a software update down the road.

I've found that if I'm up and about, it registers just fine.  It's when I'm studying or working at my desk or something like that, that it gives me the alert to stand at xx:50 (as it should).  And it seems that I have to do pretty vigorous activity to get it to read.  I just stood still for a minute and it didn't do anything.  I walked around for a minute and it still didn't do anything.  But then i waved my arm around for a minute- and it tapped me that I'd met my goal. It seems to need more than JUST standing.

My Stand feature appeared to work fine over the past week.  Only this afternoon has it stopped working, evening though I was up and about most of the afternoon.  I took a short nap, and shortly after I woke up, the notice to stand appeared, so I got up, got a drink of water, brushed my teeth, clearly moving around, and after three - four minutes, still no registering of my standing activity.

So, I just did a hard reset (two button press until Apple icon appears) of the watch, and a simple restart of the paired iPhone, to see if the Stand feature resumes next hour.  We'll see.

I was disappointed to not be getting these stand "awards" too!  Then I realized, if I don't receive a reminder to stand, that means I must have been standing for most or at least some of the hour!  That is actually good news!  Now I think getting a low number of these blue stand awards is actually the better scenario.  If you are already standing, then you don't get the reminder, and you are obviously more active than sitting.  If you are sitting ALL the time, then you will get the reminder and get up to 12 of the awards, but is that really better?  I am going to try and put that into perspective

You should still get the Stand count to increment during the day.  Since update 1.0.1 I've found that the Stand count won't increment unless you open the Activity app to check it, then it will update.  If you're sitting for the whole hour (i.e., not moving around), you should get the Stand alert.  In any case, opening the Activity app to check the recorded Stand events during the day should increment it.  I've been getting my count up to 17 this week by being especially diligent about it, including putting my watch on by 6:00 AM.

In any case, your daily activity will still get you credit for standing, but you need to open the Activity app to get the counter to increment.  Once you hit 12, you'll start getting the awards.

Same Problem to me. Yesterday i've got  two solid black bars although i have walked around.

In the next hour i walked again around and again no blue bar appeared. Then i switched off and on the watch, walked around and, surprising, Blue Bar appeared after a Short Walk.

Remember, the internal movement sensors have to record movement.  Try waiving your arms around when you're moving.  That works for me, even when I just stand up for 30 seconds to respond to the Stand request.

I agree that the Stand tracker is totally misleading and doesn't seem to be very accurate in tracking activity. According to the website, "bright bars represent hours in which you stood and moved for at least 60 seconds, while dim bars display hours in which you didn't." So, that leads me to believe:

    • You need to do more than simply stand up from a seated position; you must move, but its not clear if you need to walk about, or if flailing your arms around is sufficient. I've tried either on several occasions, and the results are inconsistent. Walking about definitely is more reliable, yet still sometimes I receive my bar, sometimes I do not. Frustrating.
    • You don't need to do a full sixty seconds of continuous movement. Getting up three different times for about twenty seconds each does seems to work. Usually.

Anyway, I find myself wasting more time trying to get my stupid blue bar than I would think is necessary. I imagine I'm not the only one. Hooray productivity killers! Also, I've found similar tracking and "short-changing" issues when doing workouts. And no, I don't have tattoos on my wrist.

I can confirm that you actually need to only stand for it to register. I’ve done nothing but stood in a single spot with watch hand at my side and iPhone in other hand while using my iPhone and my watch hand taps me after a while to tell me I did good on standing for the current hour.

You only need to move your arm up and down for a short time. While you do so you can stay sittiing on your couch or laying in your bed. For me this behaviour is  more or less unimportant since there are much bigger problems with HR messurement and distance in a gps workouts. But i also agree with you, functionality should work als it was sol for.

My stand up tracking and notification functionality completely stopped working for me on day 3 and I decided to reset it completely, back to factory settings, that seemed to make the stand setting work again. Now, only 4 days later, it is not working once again. I know I can reset it, but it is a pain to have to start from scratch again. My exercise ring and activity rings are both half way already, and it shows me standing not at all, all day.

Great point about workouts! I did 6.5 miles walking a golf course Sunday and it died half way though. While the health app reads watch data, it does not go the other way. So after an exhausting day, battery dying by 2pm, etc, this watch thinks i am lazy. ah well. first world problems I guess.

WHen you first set up your activity app if you pick the lowest setting for activity the blue ring will work. If you choose moderate or high the energy you spend will go to exercise or move ring because the watch figures your beyond the stand ring point in your activity scale. When I first got the watch I picked low for activity my blue stand ring worked fine. After a few days I reset to moderate activity or the middle choice and the blue stand ring no longer works all my energy goes to move ring or exercise ring. If you need the stand ring to work choose the low activity setting when you set up your activity app. I gone back and forth between low and moderate when I set to low it works when I set it to moderate or high it doesn't. So repair choose low activity and see.

I have been using the watch for almost a month and Stand feature worked correctly up until this morning. On average I have been standing for up to 18 hours per day then today after being up for 7 hours there is nothing in the stand ring. I went for a run for 1 hour this morning and have been active at work for at least 5 hours on top of this and still the stand ring says I have not completed 1 hour of standing!!! I used the fitness app to record the run this morning and at the point of posting I have just on 14000 steps for the day. Have restarted the watch and still nothing. I know its a minor concern but really to not have this working is not acceptable
