Q: Internet lag on only one device??

I have two mac minis, two iPads, one macbook pro laptop, two apple TVs, one iPod and one iPhone that all are on the same network.  One mac mini desktop is the oldest of all the devices.  For some reason, everything on my network connects and works just fine, except the one mac mini.  Nothing changed recently at all but suddenly just this one computer is dragging something awful.  I already updated absolutely everything, reset the  modem, router, computers and all other devices.  Still it will not perk up.  I am sitting here on the laptop in front of it and it is working just fine while I watch the screen on the mini right behind it struggle to connect and just check my mail!!  I have also tried three different browsers- Firefox, Safari and Chrome.  I have been able to use several other devices all at the same time with no lag at all, but even just the one computer with nothing else using the network doesn't make any difference either.  Is this one mac mini just getting old?  I can work on things on it just fine, but not the internet.

Help!!

Mac mini, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

I had a similar problem with my Mid 2010 Mac Mini, but not with my Late 2012 Mac Mini. They are basically the same distance and line of sight from my new Comcast Cable Modem. The 2012 had no problems connecting to the routers 5.0 MHz band, while the 2010 could only connect to and struggled on the 2.4 MHz band. For me the problem cleared up when I turned and moved the Comcast Cable Modem about 12 inches.

    1. Try running the Wireless Diagnostics as per > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202663

    2. Try moving the Mac Mini and/or your router. (sometimes even as little as 6 inches one way or the other will help)

    3. If possible, connect it directly to your router using an ethernet cable.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.

    • Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
    • If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
    • Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
    • Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
    • Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
    • Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
    • Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
    • If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

Hold the Option key and then click on the wifi icon in upper left. Take a screen shot of the info displayed and post it here

    Hmmm

Thats what I got, that mini is on ethernet to the network.  All other devices use the WIFI.  I already tried turning on the WIFI for the mini instead of using ethernet but no change.  I did not actually remove the cable itself, just changed the settings.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Well I don't know what happened.  I printed out the information on what you said to do, then before I did anything I checked the mini to see how things were before starting.  After almost three days of this problem, suddenly it disappeared and there is no lag at all.  I did absolutely nothing.  So for now I am leaving everything alone and not going to try to fix something that now seems like its not broken  LOL!

THANK YOU for all the assistance and I am saving all the advice in case it gets possessed again.
