Retina imac storage options
Am I understanding correctly that if I purchase the 512 ssd option, there is no hard drive at all??

That is correct, the 512GB SSD is the internal storage. If you need additional storage then you store that on external HDs. Many people are looking for Thunderbolt external storage devices for their speed, you may want to consider looking at OWC (www.macsales.com) Thunderbolt devices.
