Constant kernel panics and unreliability from Mavericks to Yosemite

Hi Everyone,

I purchased my 21.5" iMac mid last year, preinstalled with Mavericks. The day I took it home, I realised every few days or so (sometimes even hours/minutes) the entire machine would lock up. It began with a spinning beachball affecting that app alone, Then trying to switch to another app would lock the entire machine, then hovering over the dock would lock the magnifier. The only way out was a force reset. I was having to do this many times a day.

I tried using all tests, verify HDD, disk utility, verify permissions, used Rember to test RAM, nothing came up bad. No aprticular installation of software before this began either.

Then Yosemite came out and I prayed it was the fix I was after. Installed Yosemite, and nope, still having the same issue. I get kernel panics many times a day and I continually lose work. Apple support chat has no idea what's going on, and they've given up and said "wipe hard drive and reinstall", but this doesnt seem right to me, as I already have the latest version of OS X and this was happenin prior to Yosemite.

I've attached my latest Kernel Panic:

Every Kernel panic I have logged is messing up using launchd, but not every kext thread is identical, sometimes its the USBEthernetAdapter, sometimes its something else like below:

System uptime in nanoseconds: 164803877821174 last loaded kext at 276190444384: com.apple.filesystems.msdosfs 1.10 (addr 0xffffff7f92ab8000, size 69632) last unloaded kext at 357323537294: com.apple.driver.AppleFileSystemDriver 3.0.1 (addr 0xffffff7f9282b000, size 8192)

The other day, this:

*** Panic Report *** panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff801ebc1694): "launchd died\nState at Last Exception:\n\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2782.10.72/bsd/kern/kern_exit.c:361 Backtrace (CPU 1), Frame : Return Address 0xffffff81294f3e50 : 0xffffff801e72fe41 0xffffff81294f3ed0 : 0xffffff801ebc1694 0xffffff81294f3f40 : 0xffffff801ebc135c 0xffffff81294f3f50 : 0xffffff801ec4b386 0xffffff81294f3fb0 : 0xffffff801e836e86 BSD process name corresponding to current thread: launchd Mac OS version: 14C109 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 14.1.0: Mon Dec 22 23:10:38 PST 2014; root:xnu-2782.10.72~2/RELEASE_X86_64 Kernel UUID: DCF5C2D5-16AE-37F5-B2BE-ED127048DFF5 Kernel slide: 0x000000001e400000 Kernel text base: 0xffffff801e600000 __HIB text base: 0xffffff801e500000 System model name: iMac14,1 (Mac-031B6874CF7F642A) System uptime in nanoseconds: 361802029124291 last loaded kext at 278278433564: com.apple.filesystems.msdosfs 1.10 (addr 0xffffff7fa0d2a000, size 69632) last unloaded kext at 341592989917: com.apple.filesystems.msdosfs 1.10 (addr 0xffffff7fa0d2a000, size 61440)

I'm absolutely at a loss. I can keep the computer locked for some hours, come back home, and find the flashing folder icon. Force reset. This is becoming really really irritating as I cannot even rely on this machine to even tell me the time.

Can someone please advise me what I shpuld be doing? My iMac crashed 4 times just trying to post this!

Thanks in advance!

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), null

- try memtest86, and let it run for some hours

- i doubt the problem is your installation, i guess it's a hardware fault 😟

- to be shure, if you do not want to do a clean install, you could also try a fresh installation to a usb disk and boot from there. (backup first, backup first, timemachine backup first) 🙂

The panics are caused by a hardware fault. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up (if any) and test. If there's no change, see below.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
