Q: Incorrect sender ID when sending Tap, Heartbeat and Sketch messages

I reported this bug through Apple feedback last night. Adding here with additional details in case others see this issue or have a suggested workaround.

On Watch, select a friend who has an Apple Watch, send a Message and the recipient sees the message from the correct sender ID (matches the iPhone "start new conversations from" setting).  So far so good.  For that same friend, send a Tap, Sketch or Heartbeat, the recipient receives the item, but the sender ID is INCORRECT.

Background: I have two iPhones that use the same AppleID, one belongs to me, the other to my daughter.

See the embedded screen capture from my iMessages settings. Text Messages sent to friend from Apple Watch correctly show the sender as the +1(978)771-xxxx number.  Tap, Heartbeat and Sketch messages sent to that same friend incorrectly show the sender as +1(978)760-xxxx.  It appears that Tap/Heartbeat/Sketch messages incorrectly use the first item from the "you can be reached by imessage at" list instead of the checked item in the "start new conversations from" setting.

This is a serious bug for all the obvious reasons. All Apple Watch messages must respect the "start new conversations from" setting.

    Hi,

My friend and I have some problems with Digital Touch too. I can receive his DT on my Watch  but he can't receive mine. We have checked that list but both our numbers are both on top of the list...

It looks like this function is still bugged.

Hey DarKOrange  I am having the exact same problem as you. Ican receive digital touch from my friend but I don't seem to be able to send one back. A couple of times I did get a message saying message was unable to send but most of the time they just fade out and nothing happens.

I Did ask in the Apple Store yesterday but the guy in there didn't have a clue, told me to google it!!!. Dont think they have had much hands on yet  but hope apple fire out an update soon!!

Maybe this is useful for somebody. Have sort of the same issue. I ohave multiple iPhones (for work) with my/one AppleID. Apple watch is paired with my private iPhone. When sending taps etc. the reciever sees any of my other work phonenumbers as the sender. Checked the imessage settings as stated in other threads, all other iPhones are set to only use the primairy phone number of that iPhone to start a conversation.

When I disable imessage it still does not work (enabeling imessages again doesn't change a thing)

However when I sign out of iCloud it does work properly

When I sign into iCloud again the problem returns

checked it with some friends using multiple watches. To me it seems iCloud related. Couldn't find any solutions for that online.

What I did to solve the same problem was to go to settings/messages/send & receive and tap on the iCloud address and sign out. This way the iMessage will only use the phone number as identity.

Try these steps, which have worked for others:

    • In the Contacts app on your iPhone:
      • Check that the contact card for each friend includes their Apple ID email address and iPhone phone number (edit the contact cards where necessary).
      • Check that your own contact card includes your Apple ID email address and your own iPhone phone number [if you are also using a different Apple ID on another iPhone, it may help to create a separate contact card to hold those details].
    • Check that you have added your friends to the Friends list on your Apple Watch:
      • On your iPhone: Apple Watch app > My Watch > Friends.
      • To add more friends: In the Friends list > Add Friend > tap someone in the list of contacts. (If someone isn't in the list, open Contacts on your iPhone, add them there, then try again).
    • Delete old iMessage conversations with your friends on your iPhone and Apple Watch:
      • iPhone > Messages > swipe left on a message thread > delete.
      • Apple Watch > Messages app (from the Home screen - accessed via single press on the Digital Crown) > swipe left on a message thread > tap on trash.
    • Set new Messages conversations to start from your iPhone's phone number.
      • iPhone > Messages > Settings > Send & Receive > scroll down to Start New Conversations From > choose your iPhone phone number.
    • On your iPhone in the Apple Watch app: My Watch > General > Reset > tap on Reset Sync Data (you will not see anything happen after tapping it - the process runs in the background). Wait for a minute or so before continuing.
    • Disable and re-enable iMessage on your iPhone:
      • iPhone > Settings > iMessage > toggle off / on again.
    • Restart both your iPhone and your Apple Watch.
      • Restart Apple Watch: Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider; Drag the slider to turn off completely; Afterwards, press and hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
    • To send a Digital Touch:
      • Press the side button on your watch > Choose a friend (turn the Digital Crown then tap on the icon or picture in the middle of the display) > Tap the Digital Touch icon (pointed finger).
      • Send a sketch (draw on the screen using your finger), a tap (tap the screen once or more) or your heartbeat (place two fingers on the screen until you see and feel your heartbeat).

If your friends can't send a Digital Touch to you, ask them to follow the same instructions (send them a link to this thread).

Note: after pairing Apple Watch with an iPhone, you may need to wait an hour or more before you can receive a Digital Touch.

Hey Jonathan -- any other suggestions - I got a new watch in September - when I first got it the taps appeared to be coming from my son's phone number when I sent them (he is on my apple acct) then I got a new phone in October - I set it up as a new phone (per recommendation of apple help desk) when I did this my taps came from me.... but when I did the first apple watch update it went back to my son's number! I have since done all phone updates and the newest watch update but taps still come from my son's number.  I did all these things you suggested and still coming from my son.  Last night I completely wiped my watch and started it as a new watch - still no luck!  Anything else I should/could do?  I went to genius bar and they were no help at all!

    Hi

You may wish to consider setting your son up with his own Apple ID and then setting up Family Sharing, with you as the family organiser. You can then each use separate Apple IDs whilst also each continuing to use all of the previously purchased eligible songs, albums, movies, TV shows, books and apps.

I feel like I shouldn't have to do that... I want my son on my acct with all of our phones - we use that to monitor things... it is only an issue with his number... and I feel like apple should have a solution to this it is their problem.  Thanks

I am on the phone right now with Apple support dealing with what seems to be this issue. When I use Siri on the Watch to send a Message, the receiver sees it as coming from my work iPhone number as opposed to my personal iPhone number. All the Settings on the Watch and the iPhones are set correctly and they are unable to figure it out. I was on the phone with them for about 1/2 an hour last night and have been on the phone for almost an hour this morning. Frustrating...

If they come up with a solution, I will, of course, post it here.

I ended up doing the family share plan and it worked... all of us have our own apple accounts.... so far I haven't had any issues with it... I do however think apple shouldn't require that and that tech support should be able to help with this and they have no clue as to what to do!

OK, I am working correctly now. Here are the steps I took under guidance from Apple support:

I signed out of my Apple ID in the Messages setting on both iPhones.

I "two-button" restarted both phones and the watch.

I signed back in to my Apple ID on both iPhones.

I made sure that the phone number I wanted Messages to be sent from was correctly checked on both iPhones.

It appears to be working now. I'll report back if something changes.

I am glad to hear that the suggestion resolved your issue.

Given how iMessage works, I'm afraid that no other solution was available for your issue. iMessage is associated with your Apple ID rather than just with a phone number. Apple ID is also used to sign in to services such as iMessage and FaceTime on other devices that do not have phone numbers (eg iPad, iPod touch, Mac computers).

If you would like Apple to consider changing how iMessage works, you can suggest that here:
