Smart groups misses contacts

I am working with OS 10.9.5.

Working with Contacts, I am trying to find out which cards are NOT in a particular group, so that I can look through them and add the ones I want.

I made a new Smart Group and chose Card > Is not a member of > "group name" and it returned 103 cards.

Problem is, in my Contacts, I have 2,360 cards total. In the group in question, there are 476 cards. Thus, that new smart group should have 1,884 cards.

Why are there only 103 cards found?
