Deleting photo stream content

I want to free up more memory space on my iPhone. I was advised to turn off Photo stream, but I can't find any way to do this and get rid of the 1000 photos stored in this part of the phone's iPhoto Ap. WHILE KEEPING THEM IN THE AP. ON MY MACBOOK AIR.
