IMAC 10.5.8 - INITIAL SCREEN

Hi! Since a couple of days ago my Mac shows an inicial screen with lines horizontals and verticals, like a chess pattern. The mouse also shows that pattern.

What I've did to try to solve the problem:

1. Reboot with DVD : — Disk Utilities — Repair the Disk — after that was concluded — Repair Permissions.

2. Reset the PRAM.

When I restary it it is OK but if I wait for an hour or two and turn it on, the problem remains

Do You think that I must reinstal the whole system?

My Mac: iMac PowerPC G5 - 10.5.8

Thank You for your attention.

The symptom you describe could be a hardware problem as some of these

G5 models did have one that affected the graphic output of the computer...

And others that affected their power supplies. Testing for defects may be

a suggested route to take; an authorized Apple service provider could be

helpful, though some do not service or test older hardware versions now.

A Power Management Unit (or SMU) reset may or may not affect the symptom:

•iMac G5: How to Reset the SMU - Apple Support

Some models iMac G5 have a different reset SMU situation, due to version.

There is a tiny button on the logic board, as well as troubleshooting LEDs.

Not sure if the included Apple Hardware Test on the original DVD can help

to determine which components could be at fault in this matter. Perhaps one

of the other more experienced persons who had a G5 iMac PPC model may

see your question and offer their advice or opinion on this topic.

Good luck in this matter! 😐

Dear K.Shaffer.

Thank You for the answer.

After trying a lot I've discovered that the main problem was due to a new browser that I have installed: TenFourFox. Neither Firefox nor Safari works on my computer anymore.. Although it is told that it was built for PPC, TenFourFox caused that damage.

I've made a total cleaning — files and preferences — and now is working normally.

I thank you for your kind attention.🙂

Best wishes

There is a specific build TenFourFox download for the G5 computer, so if that wasn't

the chosen version, some problem may result. You could contact the TenFourFox

team (see their web site) by email to describe the issue, and see what they say...

Cameron Kaiser is at times quick to reply to email about the TenFourFox build issues.

Hadn't heard of anyone having the kind of issue you've mentioned with TenFourFox

in either OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 with the intended PowerPC based Macs. And

all of my (5?) PowerPC macs that still run, have a version of TenFourFox installed.

That said, feedback about TenFourFox could be addressed to their tenderapp support.

Glad you found something to be the cause of the problem, & appear to have solved it. 😐

Dear K.Shaffer,

Yes, I've choosed carefully the right version of the browse. Actually, the Safari is working, with some resources faulting, but it's working…

It is a pity that Apple doesn't look for us, PPC owners… My Mac is a great machine, it works fabulously… and I have no intention to substitute it… unfortunately I see that I must do it in the future…

I am working with Macs since Perfoma 6100.

Your tips are very interesting and I will see if I can do anything to fix the problem of the browser… but I must confess that I am a bit afraid of installing the TenFour again.

Thank You so much for your attention.🙂

Cordially,
