Update to 4.0 didn't work but I got charged. What next?

Below is how lllass helped and the directions were easy to understand. So I followed direction to the letter and purchased the upgrade/update and was told by the Apple gods not to unplug my iPod until it was updated and that it could take up to 1/2 hour. I checked back 2 hours later and my iTunes acct (at the top) said that Sync is complete... ok to disconnect. Well, I got charged for the upgrade/update to the "tune" of about $5 but nothing happened. According to my iTunes acct my iPod is still at 2.1.1. So I go back to the order page and clicked "download" again. This time there was no charge but all I got was the same - don't unplug could take 1/2 hour - so I do it again and nothing.

So... what do I do next?

Re: How do I update from ios 2.2.1 to 4? or higher? in response to OnTheMarcPoker Solved

Maybe you have a 1 G iPod

To update

The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows

iOS: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via

Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)

https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/touchLegacyLandingPage

The 1 does not have volume buttons ont he upper left edge withe the 2G and later do.

- A 2G to 4.2.1. Requires iTunes version 10 or higher. If a Mac it requires OSX 10.5.8 or later.

iPod touch (2nd generation), iOS 2.x

Did the download of the firmware complete?

You can keep trying.

You can go here to see if the firmware file is present;

If still problem you can contact iTunes

Report a problem/refund with an item purchased from the iTunes Store, App Store, Mac App Store, or iBooks Store
