Q: Unable to Check for Update - Apple Watch

I'm unable to update the software on my Apple Watch. It says "Unable to Check for Update - Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the Internet".

Both my Watch and iPhone 6 Plus have a full charge, are connected to Wi-Fi (which is confirmed to be working), and the 2 devices are sitting next to each other.

I tried restoring my iPhone through iTunes and am at iOS 8.3, watch is at 1.0 and is obviously brand new. I would like to check for updates on the Watch as the new emoji from iOS 8.3 do not display properly on the watch but am getting this error message.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I've just done mine and it has worked fine.  I expect it is just network overload caused by too many people trying to download it at once, so I'd keep trying.

From your photo it appears the "downloading to watch..." is still on the screen beneath the alert box. If so it looks like your download was not completed.

I'm having a silmilar situation but am afraid to touch the watch or iPhone: I started the download over an hour ago and am  still getting the "downloadiing " message. Must be an extreme backlog on the web.

Suggestion to others: maybe this isn't a good time to install 1.0.1.  Also, it now makes sense that they require the watch to be on charge!

I had the same "Unable to Verify Update" message across many attempts from different internet connections throughout the day. I found that choosing Reset All Content And Settings from the watch and then restoring it from a backup when re-pairing allowed me to perform the 1.0.1 update.

Thanks Charles. The reset and restore solved it for me.

I reset and restored, and still my phone is stuck on "Checking for Update..."

Have been trying for a day now to get Watch 1.0.1.

I had this same issue for several hours now. I just rebooted both my iPhone and the Watch, and the installation is now working.

Finally got it updated. Same thing happened to me, all requirements met and confirmed. First it failed to verify 3 times, after rebooting the phone it failed to check for updates. After a few minutes it was ready to verify the update again. All failed for the same reason - you are not connected to the internet, so whatever checks for internet connectivity is not working. If you want to continue the futility you can try to verify again, which seems to just hang in the state, Verifying... I continued with the insanity and to my surprise, it got to the state of Installing..., I crossed my fingers... the apple shows on the watch and the circular progress indicator shows 25% after about 6 min or so. and about 20 min to complete the circle, then it starts another progress circle that goes much faster, then back to the apple logo... and it boots up, It's working again!

    Hi Vinh

In order to be able to update Apple Watch to the latest version of watchOS, it is now necessary for your iPhone to first be updated to the latest version of iOS.

Update your iPhone and then try updating your watch again:
