when i download audio books from the library they have started being put under music rather than in the audiobook section. this has started recently as i have downloaded books from the library before and they have been listed in the audio book section

Then they have been coded as Music. If they are in your iTunes library right click and select Get Info. Y can change the Medi Kind by going to the Options tab.
t i was able to move several books to the audio book section from the music section using the procedure you described. yet several books refuse to move and when i check the info on them they are still listed as music. also is there a way to correct the settings so that audio books will be downloaded to the correct location automatically?

That depends on what the library download site allows.
If the AB is DRM protected you may not be able to make any changes. it all depends on what the author/publisher allows. It may be different from same library depending upon the author/publisher
Now when I attempt to download a book from the library, the library program seems to work okay. Then iTunes posts a message saying "updating files, preparing to update" and nothing happens.
