iPhone Remote app hangs after initial connect

So I have a new windows 8 PC in the basement that is attached to the wifi network and running the newest version of itunes. I am trying to use the remote app on my iphone to connect via home sharing but after the first time I connect, the app will hang and not allowing me to connect. Oddly I have an old ipad with the remote app that works like a charm. I have gone through all router/firewall settings and turned them off, no idea what to try next. Thoughts?
