Q: OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Crashing Constantly

The crash symptom is the screen goes black.  Holding the power button down does nothing.  The only recovery is to unplug, wait for SMC to reset, and restart.  It has happened at least half a dozen times today with no apparent provocation (i.e. making a text update to my blog).  The problem can be duplicated in Final Cut Pro X 10.2 by editing a complex video (i.e. lots of transitions and layers, etc).  That will crash the system in milliseconds and it's consistent.  Every other crash seems random.

It's maddening as that video is a red-hot development for me and productivity is finished until this is fixed.  Any ideas?

Is that before or after re-formatting the drive.  No, I'm not serious.  Apple is not willing to admit a problem exists with Yosemite so I'm screwed.

You would only need to reformat your drive if you ran Disk Utility from Recovery Drive and the results advised that you reformat.

Maybe they will even start to believe a problem exists and fix it.  I see no evidence of that here, however.

Maybe something useful.. I installed Clean My Mac 3 und Cleaned/Repaired everything, but I think this helped nothing... BUT... I opend a Pro Tools session containing a ProRes File... and it did not open, ProTools crashed immediately bevor my arrangement should appear... everytime. Then I moved the video outside the ProTools folder so PT had to search and realign it again... and it opened. The interesting thing was Clean My Mac mentioned some Quicktime tasks that did not respond and crashed. So maybe its a Video Codec problem, not only a Final Cut Pro X problem.

Still didn't get it why my imac late 2013 27" wants me to install that video pro codec 2.0.1.0 over and over again.

ps.: PT did not crash that badly like FCPX, but it crashed the "normal" way.

Clean My Mac is probably the culprit for your problems. See this discussion out using Clean My Mac Re: Re: 3 GBs used, no apps running.

Thanks for the link and information. I have Clean My Mac 2 since a long time and despite very few (maybe two) "black screen system crashes" with mavericks. I had it many times yesterday... it was and is horrible if you have to work on it. I updated to Yosemite with the release of fcpx 10.2.

But does anyone have a clue why my mac wants me to install that new codec again and again?

It's faulty packaging.  Pro Video 2.0.1 will install repeatedly.  That never happened with previous updates so I conclude faulty packaging.  One resolution described is to use a program called Pacifist to install the 2.0.1 upgrade.  I did not do that as I don't want any third-party product trying to do system maintenance.

What I take from the discussion is no option but a full system rebuild, what was once called a clean install.

Process I anticipate is to install a virgin copy of Yosemite on an external disk

Re-install applications and copy forward user files

Emerge with a clean, hopefully functional computer

Assuming success, clone that back to the SSD and all is good.

Just confirming the strategy before going on with it.

I'll try it even though Final Cut doesn't have to be running to crash the system, it's just the fastest way to test it.  For example, the machine crashes almost every time it sleeps and these days Final Cut is rarely running.

I posted it previously, here it is as of a few minutes ago

Note:  Rogue Amoeba is vendor for Nicecast, audio to Internet streaming software.  I have contacted them and they have no reports of problems under 10.10.3.  That's the No. 1 streaming software for all live musicians I know so I'm sure they would have heard.

    Problem description:

FCPX 10.2 crashes under Yosemite 10.10.3, crashes while sleeping, and others.

Hi, I will  post mine too, maybe it's useful. Btw. I had that cold starts/kernel panic once with a really fresh installation of mavericks... I can remember because I thought about a hardware fail of my new IMac, so I don't think a clean Mac OS could help. I just could fix my pro video codec installation problem thanks to this community, and I read about others having this black screen crashes...I really hope Apple is informed about this problem. Here my file:

I see CleanMyMac in your listing as it was in mine.  It's looking very much like I have no option except a full re-install of everything.

(For me, Mavericks was the best and I hated Yosemite with that stupid transparency right out of the box.  I hate cellphones and I don't want my computer acting like one.)
