why is my text being sent by my iCloud account and not my number

My text are being sent by my iCloud email and not my phone number. Why? and how do I change it back.

Settings>Messages>Send & Receive

Add your phone number and set it as the default to send messages from.

my number is already there but it is faint and I can not select it.

Take a screenshot and post it here, if it is there you should be able to select it, so I suspect you are in the wrong place.
