no audio output found, no red light. Mute box is checked and greyed out

I have lost audio from my MBA internal speakers and output jack. In system preferences/audio: 'no audio output found' and the mute box is checked but greyed out. There is no red light in the output jack.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Go step by step and test.


1. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222



2. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

Choose the method for: "Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".

3. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup


Audio Devices window

Side Bar

Click the Built-in Output.

Make sure that no box is checked under “Mute”.


4. Hold the option key down and click the speaker icon in the menu bar.

Select "Internal Speakers" from the dropdown.
