How to locate all iTunes libraries and condense into one?

Last fall I did multiple backups of my iTunes library, along with random music folders. I reloaded my OS X and it seems didn't restore my iTunes folder correctly.

What is going to be the most efficient way for me to:

1: Locate all my libraries (two backups with one being Time Machine)

2: Place them all together in a Master iTunes library?

I'm frustrated wondering if I've lost a big file of music!

I see there's been other queries similar to my problem but the ones I read were dating back a number of years ago...

Thanks for any help.

Why do you need to add all backups? Surely the most recent one is sufficient. You can see if there are commercial utilities to merge libraries without creating duplicates as the standard procedure of simply adding media from one library to another will likely create many duplicates.

While re-installing the operating system should leave your other files unaffected there is no guarantee it won't, and re-installing the operating system does not actively include any feature to back up those files first. Re-installing the operating system is rarely necessary on a Mac (I haven't changed or re-installed my OS on this computer since 2007) but tends to be a behavioral carry-over from people who used to use Windows. If there are problems on a Mac it is usually best to address those specifically.

I needed to reinstall my OS because I downloaded a bad torrent from pirate bay -- it was indeed damaging to my system; I can't remember what it was called but it did affect Mac Users (that downloaded this certain file from PirateBay last Sept/fall). *I've learned my lesson as far as downloading from non-legit sources now.*

Multiple copies of the backup because I always do two backups since I've had a few externals devices fail now. And it turned out my WD failed although I was able to sort first aid the drive and now i"m just trying to pull all the data from it while I've got it limping along.

The long and short of it is is that I didn't load the original library/music right away and just started adding the new stuff as it came along. Now I"m wanting to just pull all the iTunes music together but, well...I guess I just messed up with my filing system. I do have MacPaw which is great at sorting through duplicates.

Will Time Machine have a backup of iTunes library?

Am it only seeking .itl extensions as far as iTunes libraries go?

No, a library is a bunch of files working together:

In your case unless you want things to get very messy very quickly the best thing is to choose which library you want as your starting copy, then add any media files you think are not in that library from the media folder used by the other backup. If you want hugely messy you add all media files just to be safe and then spend a week or two sorting out the duplicates one by one. If you want immensely, hugely messy you do the former and import the other library file into the first one and sort out all the duplicate playlists created in doing so as well as all the duplicate media files. I mean for me I know yesterday's backup is last week's backup plus new media plus changes I have made, so I don't really need last week's backup unless yesterday's backup drive has fried. I only really need one or the other.

Thank you for such a detailed response. Yes, I want to avoid any more mess than I already have! It's bad enough doing basic file housekeeping, never mind having duplicates to sort though.

I've already been spending more time that I want sorting through my files a huge time sucker for sure.

I need to now sit down and read up on the links you've sent me. Thanks again for the info.
