I am trying to connect my Nikon Coolpix P530 to my macbook air via a cable. When i initially connect the camera iPhoto opens the images on the camera, but they disappear quickly and then can't be found again.How can I connect the camera via the cable and see the images?

Why don’t you insert the SD card in your Nikon Coolpix into the SD card reader slot on the Macbook Air. And then transfer the photos onto your Macbook Air.

I think so your cable connecting the camera to the macbook has become loose or faulty. Please replace it with a new one.....http://www.amazon.com/BIRUGEAR-Data-cable-Replacement-UC-E6/dp/B007FO6HAQ
Also, before replacing the cable, try to connect your camera with the same cable to some other computer to verify if its a bad cable.
