No popup for my password appears, and the circle spins for hours. Sometimes the circle with the square appears. I've restarted iBooks four times. Searching for the book several times gives the same result, except spinning circle or circle with square is already there. Network is fine. I need this book, it's the second in a series, and it appears not to be on the Kindle app's Amazon store. Help!

What are the requirements for the book? Does it say it's compatible with an iPhone – some books aren't. Try downloading the book to iTunes on your computer. If successful, sync it. As for Kindle books from Amazon, you can sometimes get different results depending on what you enter in the search field, so try different searches ie author's name, name of book.
I'm sorry I didn't specify, I'm trying to purchase the book from within iBooks on the phone. It still hadn't worked hours after I posted this.
