I don't know what I did to activate it, but not long ago a box popped up on my screen with different currency symbols like pound, euro, yen, etc. So I could use the Euro symbol in place of the $. It remained until I had to restart my computer and I haven't seen it since. Is there a way to bring up this box using the Apple keyboard?

Ok so you now can get the £ symbol, like i said the key combinations change depending on what region keyboard you are using ( you never said what yours was!)
If you just prefer the character viewer click on system preferences>keyboard>put a tick in the box "Show input method in menu bar" click on the keyboard symbol>show character viewer>Currency symbols.
In OS X 10.10.3 if you hit control, command and space bar (all at the same time) it brings up symbols and the new emoji characters. Not sure if that will still bring up anything in your version of OS X.

Try alt + 2 for the euro symbol €
Try shift + 3 for the pound £
depending on on what region keyboard you are using the key combinations will vary
Alt + 2 doesn't do a thing to bring up the window, or anything else that I can see ™ except a trademark symbol. £ ¢ ∞§¶•ªº#ª•¶§∞º but alt 3 £ brings up the pound.
I only have snow leopard. Can you do the same on that somehow?
