2008 iMac and MacBook incompatibility with fibre routers?

2008 iMac and MacBook Pro 4,1 - both running OS10.5.8 - freeze when trying to connect to a fibre broadband router using either wifi or ethernet. A newer iPad connects without problems. Is older hardware or software incompatible with new fibre routers? Turning off wifi prevents the freezing so assume it's a connectivity issue?

Seems it would be a software issue, long shot, but in Sys Prefs>Network>Wifi, turn off IPv6 & try it.
