frozen in verifying download mode. Cannot shut it down or restore to before.

I got a download notice for my original iPad mini. I tried to install it and it froze everything and just keeps cycling and saying verifying update. I don't think I have enough room for the new update but I cannot get in to the device to cancel the update. I need some help as to how to stop the cycling and get back in. The screen does not respond. Help
