Q: Safari 6.2.5 Slow

The latest version of safari 6.2.5 for my Mac running Mountain Lion is slow, hangs on opening certain web pages, won't even open some web pages and freezes at times. It froze and had to be Force Quit today when trying to print a transaction page during internet banking.

As an update and for bug fixes it performs worse than the earlier versions.

It is becoming more frustrating to use to the point where I am about to dump it and use Chrome and Maxthon as my preferred Mac browsers.

Go step by step by step and test.

    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.

        Restart the computer.

        Start up in Safe Mode.

        http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14204

    2. Delete Caches.db

Close all windows and quit all applications.

Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.

        Select "Library" from the dropdown.

        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db

Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.

        Close windows and relaunch Safari.

    3. Empty Caches

        Safari > Preference > Advanced

Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.

Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.

    4. Delete Cookies

Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:

        Click the “Details” button.

Remove all cookies except from Apple, your internet service provider and banks.

    5. Safari > Preferences > Extensions

Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.

Turn on those one by one and test.

If this doesn't help, run  EtreCheck and post the report here please.

Thanks Dominic, I will try your suggestions.

I don't think point 1.) is the cause as I am running other Macs on my network, one running Lion, one running Yosemite and they don't exhibit the same problems so I believe it is related to my Mountain Lion operating system so will try your suggestions 2, 3, 4 and 5.

    Will advise and thanks.

    Hello again Dominic,

I have carried out your suggestions 2, 3, 4 and 5 (extensions were not on anyway) and there was some improvement but on certain web pages it is still slow compared with Maxthon, Opera and Chrome which I also use and compare performance with Safari.

It seems that Safari does not perform well with certain web sites and is also very memory hungry in its operation.

Safari is also very frustrating with its handling of Flash Player when certain web pages require it.

    Thanks for your assistance,

    Wayne

If you are using TOP SITES or are not Using them - they may be the problem - Top sites are added automatically based on number of uses and they auto refresh (check for changes to the site)   -- general web search brought up articles implying it can freeze up Yosemite.

I had your problems after the last Safari update for Snow Leopard - apparently cleared up the refresh bug that was keeping top sites empty - and they were resolved by purging top sites of all sites -- and keeping an eye on them.  Problem freezes happened when using bookmarks to go into sites that were being updated by top sites.  If you reset them - it brings in apples list - so you have to edit those out again.

I later switched to Opera as my browser anyway.
