Imac will not recognize camera

This is very frustrating. I have a new camera, a Nikon AW130. Last week after using it, I connected it to my iMac and it was recognized and I was able to download the photos from that day. Now, a week later, the computer will not recognize the camera. I have no way to download the photos. What changed between last week and this week? I tried turning it on and off. I tried a different cable. I even connected it to my work laptop - an HP PC and it worked fine. I've read where people suggest using a card reader. I should not have to do that. I am just trying to download pics from my camera and I am absolutely unable to do it. This is state-of-the-art computer software and hardware? It works one week, but not the next. This is ridiculous. Any ideas out there?
