Exercise ring isn't updating.

I've used the Workout app for two days now and despite 20 minutes each time of indoor cycling, the exercise ring hasn't budged and just says 0 of 20 minutes.

Any ideas?

I did the update the other day and had two chances to use the Watch since then.

Yesterday - outdoor walk with iPhone in pocket. Distance seemed very close to what I would get using Map My Run and the Exercise ring gave me full time credit for the walk. Average heart rate 121 BPM.

Today - indoor cycle (stationary bike in gym), iPhone in locker - and disconnected according to the icon. Rode bike for about 45 minutes and received full time credit. Average heart rate 114 BPM.

I tried an outdoor walk and an indoor cycle today. The outdoor walk shows up as a workout of 31 minutes, avg heart rate 100 bpm but I was only credited with 4 minutes on the Exercise ring. Later I tried a short 5 minute indoor cycle and was credited with the full 5 minutes, average 104 bpm. The step count isn't far off my WIthings Pulse but I'm getting really frustrated with that green ring not showing the exercise. I think Apple need to open up the details of how this is all calculated and preferably allow us to tweak the settings. I have a heart condition and take drugs to protect my heart which keep my BP down and my hert rate lower, my maximum heart rate during exercise should be no more than 120 bpm. I don't know if this is a factor or not. I have got a case open with Apple on this but they aren't being much use at the moment other than telling me to try all the things I already tried. I guess all of this is really because they haven't tested it properly and version 1 software is always problematic.

So here is what happened.... I didn't pair with another phone as advised by apple but updated the software. This made the accuracy worse. I called apple to return it and the guy on the phone suggested that I start again and restore phone and watch as new (not from backup). I was reluctant as I was getting sick of testing things and just wanted to use it was advertised, not be a tester for it. Anyway I did restore both as new, and there are green shoots of recovery :-).

First I calibrated with a 20 outdoor walk with phone with me, the walk was just over 1 mile and I got credited 13 mins of exercise time, this never happened before.

Next I did 10 mins indoor walk (treadmill, phone was with me) and got credited with 9 mins exercise time...again this never happened before.

As before using other is giving me exercise time but calories seem more realistic to what I am doing.

Although I need to keep using, with and without phone, to be sure it is registering ok at this early stage I can say that this has much improved. Even the stand accuracy is better and I got full rings yesterday.

So to recap restoring phone and watch as new (not from backup) seems to work

If you try this too please post if it works for you.

Just a little more info - I have a woodway treadmill and it has a very accurate heart rate monitor in the handles where I hold on to monitor heart rate. I have the Apple watch and just set it up for an indoor run - assuming that Apple equates that to a treadmill. Apparently that was my mistake. Apple Watch has no idea I am moving. I had a Basis watch and it sometimes kept up with my workouts. It would usually take 15-20 minutes to figure out that something was happening and it needed to monitor it. That is why I was looking forward to the Apple watch. OK, here is the summary of my first test on the treadmill - First the basics - I am 58 and have a resting heart rate around 58-60. My normal workout on the Woodway is set the incline to +12 and the speed to 4.4 mph for about 30-40 minutes and then over the next 20 minutes gradually taper it down and finish the last minute at 3 mph with no incline. The Woodway shows my heart rate at something between 155 and 165 after about 8 minutes and throughout the rest of the workout. It shows that I burn on average between 600 and 700 calories and cover a little over 4 miles. All of this matches what I have seen on the doctor office treadmill test and my Basis watch. The Apple watch shows about 140 calories and about 1.5 miles covered. The heart matched and was always within 1 or 2 of the woodway value. All we need is for Apple to figure out how to use all their sensors and figure out that you are walking on a treadmill. Its info is useless as it is. If anyone knows of a more credible fitness measuring app that is aimed at treadmills, let me know. Thanks

I just wanted to share something interesting. First a little background information. I have owned my stainless 42mm watch for over a month now. I owned it with the original software. With the first version software the watch was looking at my heart rate at least every 10 min. Now I have gaps that are hours and hours long. I work in HVAC and I loved how the watch would give me credit for exercise when I was working hard even though I wasn't walking. For example working in a crawlspace my heart rate was up and I was getting credit on my exercise ring. I also noticed that when I started an exercise for example a one hour outdoor walk, I would only see credit of about 37 min because that was really the accurate time I had my heart rate up during that hour so it made sense. Now the bad news after the update there are huge gaps in my heart rate readings. Yes Apple said this was by design but it's broken.

I want you all to try this. I was sitting in my truck driving relaxed with a heart rate of 75 bpm and I started an exercise called other. Now just sitting in my truck doing nothing counts for the exercise ring! I burned 10 cal in 5 min of sitting there and my ring spins. So I tried it again sitting on the couch and yep it seems as long as I start an exercise the watch counts it even though my heart rate is at a very relaxed level. I asked my other friends that have the watch and they are reporting the same. :-( So how is this done on purpose Apple? Why would Apple change what they were using through testing that WORKED for this crappy update to the ring. I can now have my heart rate up over 140 bpm for over 30 min working and it doesn't automatically count for exercise as it used to count it before the update just fine. Now that people can just sit on the couch and get credit for working out is ridiculous! I feel like it's just a joke now, why cause some people are getting better battery life? Apple needs to go back to the old option and maybe that's just it, have it as an option don't change the complete function of it!

At any rate I want to pass on this information in hopes that Apple sees the update to the ring is horrible and I don't see any savings in battery power throughout the day from the update. I still go to bed with about 30- 25% left of battery before the update and after. It's just very frustrating to have it work so well and now it's crap and Apple says that's how we want it to be. :-(

I Am surprised that Apple hasn't addressed this question here yet. Don't they read thIs?? My watch worked fine for awhile keeping track of my exercises but now has stopped. Very disappointing. I was using the information to show my wife and heart doctor of my achievements but now I have one record. Apple, fix this problem!!!!

Exercise ring isn't updating.
