How can I stop old emails downloading onto my new iPad?

I have just bought a new iPad, all settings downloaded from my previous iPad from the iCloud.

Since activating my email accounts I have been inundated with old emails. As quickly as I delete them, more download - now up to 5,000 emails in my inbox....
