how do I get dolby digital on amp and correct TV sound through HDMI?

Hi.

I have an Apple TV 3 with latest software (7.2) 7512.

I have it connected to my TV via HDMI, and to my audio amplifier via optical output.

When using the Netflix app, I can get correct 2 channel sound on TV when I put the Dolby Digital out setting to 'Auto" in the menu on the Apple TV. However on this setting the amplifier only receives 2-channel sound (not Dolby Digital 5.1).

However when I set the Dolby Digital out setting to "ON" on the Apple TV, then I get the 5.1 channel sound through the amp, but the TV sound is just loud white-noise/static. I can mute the TV but it still means I have to change the menu setting to get the TV sound if I don't want to use the amp sometimes.

What do I need to do to get both 5.1 channel and HDMI stereo working?

thank you
