Q: WPKG.org on SAFARI

Dear All,

Every time I browse a website that cointain cookies, all brosers: Safari, Chrome or Firefox will automatically redirect me to the website wpkg.org I checked other help sites and they all say is a problem of windows, but my Mac has nothing to do with windows. Fully 100% MAC.

It happens with sites like: www.economist.com or newspapers in general. It is not the internet connection because I tried in China, Japan and also using VPNs.

Also cleared all cookies, reset all the brosers settings, cookies, etc and the problem keeps on happening.

Do you know any way to solve this problem?

Thank you very much!!

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

Most likely, your problem is caused by the adware plug-ins in your browser. I believe you need to use Adwaremedic. It's a tool that is developed to remove the adware.

Thank you. I did it, and cannot find any adware... Also eliminated all extensions, changed the home page, search engine... it is unbelievable how this thing works. I'm glad I can still access these discussions...

To disable nasty redirect for various pages to WPKG.org - temporary disable your browser JavaScript support!

Open Safari, Under Safari menu > "Preferences" , Go to "Security" Tab, Next to "Web content" Uncheck "Enable JavaScript".

This is just temporary solution because many pages may not work/display properly!

Can you try and confirm if it works for you as well?

    Hi Mveplus!

It works, now the pages are not the same as used to (was a bit hard to reply this post as well) but it works to avoid the nasty redirect.

In another blog I read that there is also a temporary solution blocking the site with adblocker

Marco, It seems this was the solution:

In china right now, figured out the problem. Seems likely to me to be another Great Cannon. Any website that has a "facebook connect" button on it will redirect to wpkg.org. The reason being is that the Facebook Connect button uses "connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js" Going to this from a China IP redirects immediately to "http://wpkg.org/my.js" instead of giving the correct javascript facebook SDK. You can try it out yourself.

The "my.js" file has only one line which sets your browser to go to wpkg.org instead.

    "...

Yes, that's what is causing the issues! Every page that has FB button will redirect.

For Safari i didn't find another workaround beside disabling JavaScript support. I had AdBlock installed with block social media buttons enabled, as I do that first thing on a new OS.

Safari with Adblock still is redirecting to wpkg.org opening cnn.com. Even on Firefox with Adblock was doing the same thing.

So far Firefox's Ghostery add-ons solved this (NoScript add-ons does the job too).

This looks to be an issue only for people that are inside China. Isn't it?

It looks like adding custom filter to Adblock, "connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js" and "connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js" solve the issue until the wave is over, for Safari too.

    Thanks Juan!
