    Terence,

    We're going in cicles ....

I have signed in using my correct ID ... the point is that I have never downloaded iPhoto from the App Store .... it was pre-installed on my brand new iMac.

I've followed the link to the 'un-hide' approach, and I've followed another poster's suggestion to create a whole new user and try that.

Either way, my operating system will not open iPhoto, as it claims it needs updating, and the App Store has absolutely nothing in it that I can download.

48 hours ago I had a fully working iPhoto ... now I don't; it looks pretty dead to me.

    Grateful for any further advice,

    John

Did you buy a refurb or open box machine? You need to contact the vendor.

Brand-new, sealed-box, 27inch iMac Retina direct from an Apple Store.

    Thanks for trying.

I may give Apple one more chance before simply moving over to Lightroom.

I would get in touch with that Apple Store. That said, if you're comparing iPhoto or Photos with Lightroom they are in rather different categories. The Adobe app is a pro level app and much more capable that than the giveaway Apple apps -  a quality reflected in the price. If you're seriously considering LR there is nothing for you in the other apps.

    Hi

I have just spent quite a while doing the same, trying to re-instate iPhoto and seemed to have the same issues as John. But once i read properly, it worked.

You need to trash the old non working iPhoto out of the application folder (one with light no entry sign on). Once you have done this you can then install from the purchased section on the App store. Until you trash you will see (unless hidden) the iPhoto purchase but clicking on install will do nothing. Once trashed it then will install.

I did find a workaround before though which entailed right clicking on the application in the application folder then entering the  show package contents > Contents > MacOs then clicking on the executable file. This will start iPhoto and you will be able to use. But above is the better option.

If you have sussed already (post is a bit old) hope this helps.

    Thanks Gus,

I will try this, but as I've posted before, I've never purchased iPhoto from the App Store so I don't think even if I trash current version, it will work.

Since my last post I have had a long conversation with Apple Tech Support and their final, clear, unambiguous message is 'IT CAN'T BE DONE!'

In their mind Photos is a better product and they have no sympathy for those of us who disagree. This has soured my good opinion of Apple, built up as a customer of some 30 years standing.

It can be done John, i done it myself last night! They are informing you incorrectly.

I didn't purchase either, the same as you it came with the iMac i bought. But i think when you register the mac that is your purchase date for all included apps.

Open App Store from your dock, click on purchases and you will see the iPhoto app. Once you have trashed the old app from the application folder the button will change to install and you will be able click and install. Until you trash the button won't do anything.

Just to show its possible a screenshot of my dock, Photos, Aperture and iPhoto all together.

I'll be glad to help further if you have no joy, let me know

    Hi Gus,

I'm away from home for a few days so will check this when I get back. My memory is that iPhoto is simply missing from the App Store ... it's not that its there but won't download ... it's just completely missing.

    I'll have another go.

    Hi Gus,

I don't know why some people are being successful here and some aren't ... it must be something subtle like different country's App Stores, or the specific order that things were loaded / downloaded / bought.

Anyway round, I've checked again, and iPhoto just isn't there on my App Store page, either greyed out or hidden.

Sounds like it really is time now to give up.

    Thanks for help.

Did you remove it from your applications folder to the trash and then try as the directions state?

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3

Brilliant.  I've been searching for some time to resolve this issue and it was really simple. As you say, just delete the defunct old version of iPhoto and re-install it from the App Store.

    Thanks

I had the same issue as JohnMarcle - regardless of what procedure tried, iTunes was simply not avail in the App Store. I know gusman's procedure worked for him and others, but I (and JohnMarcle) cannot see iTunes by itself in the app store.  I only see complete downloads for Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite.

    Any ideas?
