Q: Give feedback on Photos versus iPhoto

I am very unhappy with the New Photos App and will continue to use iPhoto. The new Photos App is very difficult to use.  Why have Apple added this App?  Is it as a result of consumer research on iPhoto?

If I hadn't just invested in a new iMac I would consider reverting to using a Windows PC so that I can use Adobe Photoshop for adjustment and organising my albums.  I have over 40000 photos recording my world travels and I am truly not interested in seeing all 40000 at any one time!!

If Apple ever stop supporting iPhoto I am going to be extremely angry.

The feedback form for Photos is here, Terence.  Apple - Photos - Feedback

Let the developers know, which iPhoto features are important to you. I hope the next update will bring more features to Photos, that makes it more useful for very large libraries.

Use iPhoto for the time being.  iPhoto 9.6.1 is working very well with MacOS X 10.10.3.

The migration let iPhoto installed and also your iPhoto Library will still work with iPhoto.

If you did not uninstall iPhoto, it will still be there in your Applications folder.  And if you had updated to the latest version iPhoto 9.6.1 before you upgraded to MacOS X 10.10.3,  you can simply drag iPhoto back to the Dock from your Applications folder and continue to use it. Double click iPhoto and confirm, that you want to open iPhoto and not Photos.   It is not compulsory to use Photos, while it it still the first release. When you launch iPhoto, you will see a warning, that the iPhoto Library has been migrated to Photos, but simply click the "Open iPhoto" button. The library will still work with iPhoto. ()see: If Photos won't open a library that you already migrated - Apple Support

If your iPhoto version is not iPhoto 9.6.1, you need to update it.

    See this User Tip:

Usually it will work to reinstall instead of updating:

Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS... | Apple Support Communities

The main idea is to move the iPhoto app to the Trash, so Spotlight does not see it as installed, reload the AppStore, and then to try to download again from the App Store - from your Purchases tab, not from the main page, since you can neither buy iPhoto nor update it, but you can reinstall, if your AppleID is associated with it.

I too got a new iMac a year ago, and also was very unhappy the first couple days. But after couple of weeks of using it, you'll begin to getting used to it.

About loving it...not sure. iPhoto was more stable, better organized...etc.

A LOT and LOT of bugs. Editing in Photos suddenly stopped working. You can not copy an image and paste into an external application...and more.

Usually applications for Mac were transferred to iPhone.

Now, it is the other way around.

Apple now is now about money. And BIG money is in iPhone and iPad, not in Mac anymore.

I won't be surprised if Apple in two years will stop making Desktop computers at all.

Try a very good program called  'LYN'.

It works like iPhoto. And the developer is very responsive, just like the developer of GraphicConverter.

I'll keep using Photos for another couple months and see how it goes after Apple fixes all the bugs.

    Hi Leonie

Thank of for your helpful and comforting reply.  How do you let the developers know what works best for a large library?

Good advice to persevere but will stick with iPhoto for a while to manage my large library.

How do you let the developers know what works best for a large library?

I'd explain in the feedback, what is missing in Photos, and which features helped in iPhoto to structure and search the photos. For me, these features are missing (some are Aperture features):

    • Batch changing titles, captions, dates.
    • Batch copy of adjustments,
    • Adjustment presets and Metadata presets.
    • Support to add locations to photos.
    • Metadata display below the thumbnails.
    • More smart rules for the smart albums.
    • Keyphotos for smart albums
    • Merging Photos libraries and exporting partial photos libraries.
    • More sort options for albums and moments.
    • Maps for photos in albums and larger maps. Most of my travels I cannot show on a map, because the moments are limited to one state.  I can neither show my drive along the Trans Canada Highway on one map, nor the trip to Antarctica with all stops on the way.
    • For more versatile editing brushed adjustments would be necessary - to be able to blur the background for example to add depth of field or touching up the colours  of selected objects.
    • Support for an external editor.

I could go on and on ...

I can add that I am also very unhappy about the new photo's application. The main reason for that is that for some reason some albums will synch with my iphone and ipad, and some others won't. When I select them for synching, The album becomes visible for a brief moment on my ipad and then it appearently decides it doesn't allow that specific album on my iphone6/ipad-retina. This was not the case before migrating to the new photo-application, so there must lay the problem.

Another reason is that the old iphoto application was much more user-friendly than this current application which is basically the photo-app from iOS. (which was the exact reason why I never use that iOS version for anything other than viewing, because it is terrible in anything else). I would sincerly hope that Apple offers a way out of this mess for it's users.

Last note: I am glad I only made the mistake of migrating iPhoto to this new app, and not my aperture library (I can't think of a single reason why anyone would downgrade to such an extend as it would be from aperture to the new photo's app!).

Many thanks.  Your response gives great insight into the technical details I need to include in any feedback to the developers on iPhoto.

Your explanations will help me to draft a more cogent and reasoned response to the Developers.  Thank yo for sharing your time and expertise.

    I've submitted these:

    • cmd-R rotates counter-clockwise (top of image to the LEFT)
    • backgrounds are white ONLY (except of editing and image)
    • doesn’t preload the detected cameras (or other info?) for filtering
    • run a gauge on keyword setting (~3000 images take ~20 minutes)
    • stop requesting confirmation after every single “Hide”
    • open a large album and “empty” is the first content

My biggest gripe is that for some reason there is no way to sort my imported iPhoto Events, now called Albums, by date>descending.  This seems so obvious but it's not there. You can check "Keep Sorted by Date Added" not the date date the photo was taken. Or, It gives me the option to sort by "Title"....?  Huh, what good is that to anybody?  Just let me sort in the order the photos were taken.  I'm only saying this because after importing my iPhoto events, they are now in no particular order when viewing in all albums view.  It's mostly right but ,there are pics from 2010 up in the pics from 2014.  I was able to move it manually but why should I have to?

I also geo-tagged all my photos before importing into Photos.  Some are right, but at least half or more are all messed up.  They either have the old wrong location which I had corrected in iPhoto or some place so far off that something is seriously wrong.  Some photos taken near my home in Portland, Oregon are now showing as being on some golf course in Angels Camp, CA.  ***?

I really was excited to try Photos for Mac but,  I'm not digging at all.   I miss being able to scrub across and Event/Album and see all the pics flutter by.  That was great and convenient.  Now I have to open the whole event just to see what all is in it.  I guess the Year>Collections>Moments views are good for some things but not when you start narrowing down into your iPhoto albums view.

I gotta agree with léone's list above.  These are not "Pro-only" features and shouldn't have been removed.  Full screen maps that get more specific when zooming in are awesome.  That's what makes geo-tagging worth it.  All we get is a little 2" x 2" map for that photo unless you pick two or more pics from different locations.  Then you get a big map but, it's only for those pics selected.  I want a map that shows all pics on it and I'm sure I'm in the majority on that one.

So far, it isn't really a fun app for me to use.  It's not overly intuitive, too many different views and menu bar changes depending on wether the side bar is showing or not.  Wait, what just happened to the  Photos  Shared  Albums  Projects  buttons that were just there in the menu bar?

I was always excited for a new version of iPhoto to see what cool new stuff it would let us do.  Even little improvements were welcome.  This new Photos app seems to not translate well into a Mac app.  Its just fine on my iOS devices but this app already needs a major overhaul if they want me to use it exclusively.

It might be fine for all the Mac newbies out there but for all of us who have used iPhoto and Aperture since the beginning, well....we have expectations.

I now have sympathy for all the Final Cut X users.  I thought they were a bunch of whiners.  But hey, all that whining got a lot their functionality back.  So I'm gonna start whining to.  I really want this new app to be good so I'm gonna give it time before I give up on it.  H e l l, it's only version 1.0

Thanks for starting this thread, feels good to get this out.

Agreed Manco, and thanks for the FCPX-sympathy, know all about that!

You know what? Somehow Photos just looks very BLAND and UNINSPIRED. It doesn't seem to belong to Yosemite's new looks. Excuse me for the caps.

It's not very Apple-like to abandon the iPhoto-evolution for something as 'Windowish' as this. White all over? Can't even get set the background to black. I also miss being able to scrub across events and albums to see all the pics flutter by! And where's date descending? Heck, I didn't even check out Photos even further than that. For now I'm still enjoying iPhoto.

Good to get it out? You might as well tell a tree in your front yard - posting complaints here has no value - if you want to send to Apple where at least someone who cares will read it) see https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

Very good to get it out and yes Larry, posting complaints here has value! Sending feedback to Apple isn't public. At least i know i'm not the only one not switching to Photos. On a positive note: i do believe that Photos eventually will evolve into something fantastic. I've experienced the same proces with FCPX. This may take a couple of years and in the mean time i will continue to use iPhoto.

Not sure if you've noticed this too, léonie, but you can't even rotate a photo with the track pad anymore.  I see you can still zoom in and out by spreading your fingers in and out.  Guess they forgot to remove that ability /s

I know I said plenty in my previous post but I really hope they add back the ability to mouse over an Album to see the date range and number of photos in that Album.  Was using iPhoto today and really like how that feature is implemented.

WWDC can't come soon enough.  Hope they surprise us.
