How do I get rid of malware?

I have a MacBook Pro running Yosemite.

I thought I was downloading a new version of Java and now seem to be infected with some sort of malware. Pop ups all over the place.

I was always told not to worry about virus protection with a Mac, but maybe that's no longer true. How can I get rid of what is causing these problems?

MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Hi. Follow the instructions on this web page in order to manually remove adware from your mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203987

You may also find adware removal guide on this page http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-identification/

If you do not want to remove adware manually use adware medic tool in order to scan and remove it: http://www.adwaremedic.com/

Download, open adwaremedic dmg file , and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.

Once done, quit AdwareMedic and restart your mac.

There are at least two schools of thought expressed by experienced users here in this Apple community regarding malware and popups.

One school primarily uses free application(s); the second school requires no additional software and just some simple steps on your part.
