I have a 21.5 inch (late 2013) iMac with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i% processor and 8 GB of RAM, running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 that sounds like it's snoring. When the sound is muted it stops. It doesn't appear to be an alert. Any ideas how I can stop it or what could be causing it?

Does this occur during sleep mode or when you are working on it?
It sounds like a possible hard drive failure; however, I don't believe that would stop while muted. Unless someone here has had a similar experience, I'd suggest taking it to your nearest Genius Bar or, if you're still under warranty, simply contact Apple tech support.
This is not a joke reply. I had exactly the same problem on a shared iMac, it turned out to be Lenny Henry snoring! If you have an email from Premier Inn and you have not closed Mail then hey presto!
Apparently you are not kidding? I would let them know in no uncertain terms that that is completely unacceptable and that they just lost a customer because of a totally annoying and unacceptable marketing gimmick.
