I have more music on my phone than shows in iTunes... how do I update without losing what I have on my phone

My phone shows 1,143 songs on it; but when I downloaded iTunes, it only have 543 songs... I have tried to fix this before and lost everything on my phone until I went to the previous computer I used... iTunes confuses me and I just want all my stuff in one place... any help would be good.
