switching tabs way more difficult in Safari 8

Finally bit the bullet this morning. First issue that annoys the he** out of me is that I usually have a LOT of tabs open in Safari. A lot. It's just how I work. Previously, the first tabs that were open would STAY in their place. Once you went beyond that, there was a double-arrow button on the right hand side that would display the list of open tabs that were' visible. Now, that's gone and it's extremely frustrating to me. Any idea how to revert back to the old functionality???

I was similarly disappointed with the new tab system until I discovered that if I place the cursor on the line of tabs, I can scroll sideways with a one-finger sideways swipe on a Magic Mouse or a two-finger sideways swipe on my MBP's trackpad. Now I find I refer that method for faster access than I had before.
