Does iPad 2 (model MC979B/A) have Bluetooth 4? If not is there any way it can pair with a Bluetooth 4 device?

No, the iPad 2 has bluetooth 2.1

however as stated by Garmin themselves:

Garmin will attempt to keep this list up to date with the most popular Smartphones that feature Bluetooth Smart technology however it will be possible that a particular model may exist and appear to work but not be listed as compatible.

They probably have not tested their products with an iPad 2, but since BT is backwards compatible it is possible it may wok though there's no guarantee it will.

You'll need to try it. Make sure you can return the vivofit if it does not work.

Taken directly from Garmin's support page the device must be 'Bluetooth 4 capable'. The iPad 2 is not.

Yes,

However, Garmin states they have not tested all devices. while they do state BT 4 is necessary as stated BT is backwards compatible, so unless the device requires some feature from the BT 4.0 spec specifically, it may still work. Though again no guarantees.

I'm just saying there may be a remote chance it might work. Not guaranteeing it will.
