Repairing external hard drive after being removed from Mac incorrectly.

Macbook Pro OS X 10.7.5 My external hard drive fell off the cable and now it needs to be repaired. "Mac will attempt to repair..." but evidently can't. When I get into Disk Utility I don't see my external hard drive listed. Periodically, it shows up but is grayed out. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I hope I've given enough information.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5)
