Yosemite takes way more space than announced?

Problem

I bought a new SSD HDD for my macbook pro, installed SnowLeopard (from CD), made the necessary updates so that i could get app store and downloaded/installed Yosemite. However, now that I'm done, I've spent about 15gb, instead of the announced 8gb.

Assumption

I'm thinking that the extra gb's are SnowLeopard+updates hidden somewhere on my computer, but i don't know if this is true!

Question

So, question - do i have both Yosemite and SnowLeopard+update on my computer now? AND how do i remove everything else but Yosemite??

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)
