Try booting from you Snow Leopard DVD. See if it boots, if it does then open Disk Utility and look to see if your internal HD is "seen."
What exactly do you see when your iMac turns on and what do you see right before it turns off?
Unfortunately my DVD drive doesn't work. I have 2 iMacs and the DVD drives failed on both of them. VERY disappointing!
The only thing I can get the iMac to do is go into Target mode. I plan on hooking it up by firewire to a Macbook (the only other computer I have with firewire) so I can have it show up as an external hard drive. Then i'll try running disk utilities to see if it finds anything.
When the computer tries to boot up, it gets as far as playing the startup sound, showing the Apple logo and about a quarter inch of progress in booting then the screen goes black and its off.
IT needs to be taken in for service.
When booting the Mac, press and hold Command + V right as you hear the "Dong". This will boot the computer into verbose mode. If that doesn't work, press and hold Shift at the "Dong". This will boot the computer into safe boot.
