Photos blank thumbnails

Hi,

I have migrated my Aperture library to the new OS X Photo's app. The import seemed to work fine, but the for the majority of my library I see no thumbnail images, making it impossible to browse my library. See the screenshot below. All that whitespace should be thumbnails. Its infuriating...

Has anyone else seen this? If so, is there any cure? I have already tried a repair... The images are all there, I can view them by doubleclicking the white frame.

I had a similar issue on my iPhone (setup to "optimize storage"), while all the pictures are "filled in" on the Mac, perhaps because that device is setup to mirror (include) the entire library. On the iPhone, I had to restart the device and then scroll through the blank thumbnails at the photo level (i.e. not at the Moment or Collection level). Once I did this, the thumbnails started to populate by themselves (which then took some time)

I am having a similar issue with Photos.

After importing photos from an SDCard with photos taken on a Canon PowerShot G16, most of the photos (thumbnails and photos) are displayed and can be edited as expected in Photos; but there are a random number of photos that are imported but the photos (thumbnails and photos) are displayed as white.

I have "repaired" the Photo library, but it did nothing to resolve the white image.

Selecting the photo allows you to get the information on the photo, showing what device took the picture, size of the picture (2MB to 3MB in size typically).

It still gets a little weirder, editing the photo shows the image as it should be see in the thumbnail or simply viewing the photo, editing->enhancing the image and saving the changed photo seems to solve the issue; my images are now see as thumbnails, can be viewed, and can be edited.

This is not a solution to the issue, because it is time consuming (editing 100's of pics one at a time) and it is not really resolving the issue, it's a work-around for something Apple should answer why it is occurring and how to prevent this with future imports.

Thanks tomfromaustin for the idea. I just figured out a quicker workaround than editing each indvidual photo. I had several in blocks that were missing the thumbnails. I selected everything in the album, then right clicked to rotate clockwise. I just rotated them 4 times so that they ended up in the same position they were. Voila. The thumbnails were generated.

This usually means that Photos is still generating the thumbnail images. It will continue creating them in the background, even if you close the application, so give it time to complete its housekeeping chores.

if you're concerned that the photo did not migrate properly, just click on any "blank" spot. The thumbnail should be generated for that selection shortly.

Hi,

Thanks... I assumed that what what was going on, but I have left it for 2-3 days and it doesn't appear to be making much progress. But then I do have 36,000 photos in my library, most of which are large RAW images.

How long does it normally take to crawl through a library of this size? Anyone had experience of doing this?

Thanks,

James
