Why do programmes that I have downloaded from iTunes to my device return to the cloud and not stay downloaded

ive purchased a series of TV programmes from itunes and downloaded them to my iPad and iPhone. Both devices have plenty of storage and they download the episodes fine. Next day the programmes are back in the cloud and not stored on the devices, why is this? I need the episode to watch on a flight and will have no wifi to download from cloud
