Open AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon
Look for the setting for Status
Click on the amber dot there
What does the message say?
Network: mine listed
connection: excellent
ip address: correct
serial number: xxx
version: 7.6.4
status: extended network
What is the model number of the other Apple router that you have there that is producing the wireless network that the AirPort Extreme is trying to "extend"?
Time Capsule 2 years old
Power off both the Time Capsule and the AirPort Extreme
Wait a minute
Power up the Time Capsule and let it run for a full minute
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run for a full minute
