how do i transfer my number onto my apple id account

How do i transfer my cell phone number onto my iPad? i just broke my phone and i need to get my messages transferred onto my iPad. I went under messaging settings and under my apple id account the only thing it says i can use is my email address. how do i get my phone onto my apple id account?
