Q: Folder invalid character

Hi,

iTunes WIndows always worked for me but the latest release refuses to install stating that my iTunes fodler has invalid characters.

This is not true.

"The folder path "J:/private/My Music/iTunes Steve" contains an invalid character".

The iTunes folder has always been on an external disk and never caused any kind of problems.

Therefore I can't install the latest version.

Any idea?

(No, I won't move music to my hard disk)

Thanks for any help

Steve J.

iTunes occasionally gives error messages which don't reflect the true problem. Try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows. I assume you're running this instance of iTunes under Windows rather than OS X despite your product information.

That said, if this is a problem at install time then see the user tip Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

You should normally install the application or its components to the default paths of C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86).

    Hi,

Thanks for your help. You're right, this is iTunes for Windows.

I fixed the rights, removed all apple, ipod, itunes, bonjour instances from my hard disk, cleaned the registry, rebooted.

As soon as iTunes6464.exe is launched is stops immediately even before trying to install anything.

Probably gets the "My Music" folder from the registry, J:/private/My Music/iTunes Steve, this has always worked.

If I install the previous iTunes version, it works without problem, even after a clean install. That latest version just won't launch at all

    (and I'm Administrator)...

Oh well I come back to the previous version and stick to it.

    Thanks anyway.

You could try this version. iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards)

The setup file shouldn't be reading the library file location. Perhaps there is some other corruption either in the %Appdata%\Apple folders or a registry key where Apple records where iTunes has been installed to in the past.

    Thanks for the link.

It also fails. It goes further in the install but stops with the same problem.

I finally ended up deleting everything, cleaning all folders, registry, etc... and reinstall the latest "normal" iTunes installer and it worked fine.

    Try to understand.

Anyway, thanks all for your help.
