Mail POP account username and password log in failed

With two e-mail addresses in an earthlink web hosting account, the POP account setups in Apple Mail are identical except the difference in the two e-mail addresses. accounts had worked flawlessly for a long time. One account works without problem. The other e-mail address suddenly started returning an error message that the login to the POP account failed. Apple Mail message under "Connections" is asking to verify the username and password are correct.

After checking the e-mail host account for userid and password, they were correct, and then re-setting the password in the host account. The host account is working without any issue. Apple Mail continues to give the error message.

Continue to be able to receive and send e-mails, under the malfunctioning in Apple Mail e-mail account, but Apple Mail is now deleting the copies of sent and received e-mails. And Apple Mail continues to give the error message "Trying to log into this POP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct".

I also tried eliminating the POP account giving the error message in Apple Mail and then creating a new one, but all I managed to do apparently was delete the entire history of sent/received e-mails in that account. Error message continued on adding back that POP account to Apple Mail.

Any assist or guidance appreciated.

What do you mean by "After checking the e-mail host account for userid and password, they were correct, and then re-setting the password in the host account. The host account is working without any issue."

You mention two Earlink accounts but above you menting only one account.

Can you access both account on a different device or on the Mac with other then Mac Mail.

Thanks for taking the question Illaass.

1 - the two e-mail addresses i mentioned are created inside the one earthlink account. With earthlink you can have up to 8 e-mail addresses in one web hosting account. The e-mail addresses are not in different accounts. The mystery is, within the same account why the one e-mail address works fine and the other has this problem.

2 - I can access both the webmail account at earthlink via a browser without a problem. I can also access both the e-mail accounts via www.mail2web.com, without any problem.

3 - At my location, my home, and using Apple Mail installed on my mac mini or mac air I have the problem as described. Also using my android cellphone which checks e-mail I am also having the problem as described.

Further to your question Illaass, I have gone to the web hosting technical support on this.. They cannot find an answer at their side that explains the issue. No solution from them, after extensively checking the incoming mail and outgoing mail settings.

One other note, Apple Mail is crashing at times now, possibly because I'm opening the e-mails sent to the problematic e-mail address.

Since you said "Also using my android cellphone which checks e-mail I am also having the problem as described."

That would indicate a problem with either your settings or with EarthLink.

Just for clarity you have two Earthling accounts as far as Mail setup. EarthLink is the whe handle how many email addresses are allowed with one payment account.

Illass, I've gone over this extensively with Earthlink tech support, checking settings my settings, checking whatever they check at their end. They say, "it's not us".

Here's the crux of one thing I cannot understand. The two e-mail addresses have always been set up exactly the same. They ran with no problem. Now they have exactly the same set up settings and one works fine as always and the other one is malfunctioning as described.

I know it looks like a settings issue. That's the error message. But the settings are correct and as they were before this problem occurred.

Yes, your point about Mail and Earthlink is correct and well understood here.

I would like to update this topic for anyone caught in this nightmare, when the usual solutions of double checking your e-mail client's settings, and Keychains do not yield a solution. In fact I would make this the first thing to look for, because the other solutions can be very time consuming even with technical support. Check to see if your address is Blacklisted. You can do this fairly easily by first going to whatismyipaddress.com/ Then to http://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check

Turned out I was a victim of a "spoofing" attack: received a reply to a message you never sent and was blacklisted in two spam databases and they were blocking my e-mail address.

I reported this to my e-mail service provider and they followed up on it and got my e-mail address unblocked finally. But I went through 3 different tech support people with their company and even though I made it clear that I had been suspiciously spammed at the time my e-mail became blocked, they doggedly drug me through outgoing and incoming e-mail settings and keychain settings. Bewildering to me in an internet world full of spam that they ignored this, but steadfastly they did. And in fact, no one here in Apple Support Community mentioned it either. Now you know.
