Severe battery expansion.

Hi guys!

Over the past few weeks, the battery in my iPhone 4 has been expanding very, very quickly. In the span of two weeks, it's almost completely pushed the back casing off the phone. I've spoken to three Apple reps on three separate occasions, who've acknowledged that it's a hardware fault and have all told me that it's a major safety issue. But they also said that because it's out of warranty, I'll have to pay for a refurbished replacement or an entirely new phone. Has anyone had any luck securing an out of warranty repair or replacement because of a battery issue like this?

I've had the exact same problem too with my 5. Expanding battery pushing the otherwise perfect screen out. I was told it is a "feature" of the iPhone batteries and because of the age of my phone they need me to pay for it.

I'd rather that the battery didn't expand and ruin the phone? I guess it is better than it exploding.

I will let you know if I find a solution other than paying for a full replacement phone.

When I attempt to post asking why expanding Li-ion battery information can be found nowhere on the Apple site or product documentation, they delete my post. That seems like willfully hiding something critical to your device. They seem to be OK with your device crushing itself once it's out of warranty ... but they aren't doing anything to encourage people to upgrade (per their latest PR foray).

You may have to see if you can get a replacement battery, and if you can

see how they are removed and replaced; should there be this information

in a repair guide and since your iPhone is out of warranty, consider if it is

worth the cost to try a repair yourself. Or a qualified private repair agency.

However, a phone that has been tampered with may not be considered

when or if presented for official Apple support or exchange toward a

replacement phone should that option be available & exercised...

So the price you don't pay IF you could replace the battery, may be OK

for the moment. Yet any other opportunity to use that iPhone as a core

toward a replacement would likely be void.

Some tiny businesses in shopping malls exist that offer to replace iPhone

and iPod Touch screens, batteries and other parts. They have no direct

affiliation with Apple, and there is no guarantee they'd use authentic parts.

While the warranty has expired, there are other opportunities that may be

investigated before you choose from any additional options available...

There are other authorized service providers, independent agents, who may

repair or otherwise offer iPhone service in countries where Apple has no store.

In either outcome, the bad battery should be removed and probably sooner

than later, with other damages likely more costly than just a battery + labor.

Good luck in any event...! 🙂
