Why can I no longer see my iPhone icon in iTunes?

Up until recently, my iPhone would appear as an icon in iTunes, and I could follow a dialogue to back up whenever I wanted to. But now I can't see the iPhone icon in iTunes, and the options for File>Devices is greyed out. I can backup by going to the iPhone and the Settings menu, but I can no longer backup via my iMac. I can no longer get the view of my iPhone that shows my apps on the pages they are assigned to on the iPhone.

I have tried turning both devices off and on; they are both connected to the same network.

Has the wifi option been removed? Do I have to connect by USB cable?

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), MacBook Air, iPhone 5
