I am using numbers. The app takes over my entire screen and the menu bar hides. Also, if I want to look at mail or some other application, I must first close numbers. I can't find a fix for this problem.

It sounds like you are in full screen. If you put your mouse in the upper right corner you should see
Click those arrows and you should exit full screen without needing to quit the app. If you find you like full screen, you can get back to your other apps by swiping back with 4 fingers.

In OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 press the esc key (top left of your keyboard) to exit Full Screen.
This works with the Australian keyboard.
Or control command f to toggle between full screen and 'normal'.

I don't see the arrows in the top far right corner. My menu bar ends with the item preceding it. But not to worry, someone suggested using the ESC key and that works, so I'm happy.
