iMessage problems

so when I'm out and text people, not using iMessage because I don't have 3G etc, When they reply as an iMessage it doesn't come through on my phone but to my iPad at home connect to my wif.

So I don't get there reply till I'm home.

don't know how to fix this?? It's only started to happen recently
