May 4, 2015 1:56 PM in response to rachaelnthomasby jul22,I have the same problem, I am very disappointed. I mainly do exercise on an indoor bike and it can't record that on the activity app, my heart rate average is about 120 and I have tried with and without the workout app and it doesn't show up on the green ring. HR is being recorded as shown in the Health app.
I also move around all day and am only about half way through the move goal of 400 cals, it started off at 490 but I reduced it, what should it be, I only sit down for about 10 mins a day and only seem to burn about 200 calories! I spoke to Apple, they said they would look into it...

May 4, 2015 2:27 PM in response to jul22by Winston Churchill,Please re-read my post, you are only credited with exercise if you either move your wrist enough or log an activity as 'Other'. So yes it's quite possible to get time recorded as an activity but not as exercise. I couldn't say how much your wrist needs to move but it doesn't credit small movements. My son is credited with a lot of exercise when he demonstrates giving CPR, which he does a lot on occasions.

May 5, 2015 1:53 AM in response to Winston Churchillby jul22,Thank you very much for your reply. I think it is pretty poor that the only way to record exercise from an indoor cycle is to log it as other in the workout app, why does indoor cycle not work? it also should monitor exercise without having to use the workout app altogether, I thought this was the whole point of it.
I am still also not sure whether it is registering all my movements as I said I move all day and only burn about 200 calories according to the watch.
It also seems to be the second biggest drain on my iphone's battery, using 15% over 24 hours, only slightly less than the home screen which used 16%.

May 5, 2015 3:28 AM in response to jul22by jul22,Hi, one more question, is it a fault with the watch and should I ask for a replacement or will I have the same problem with the replacement? can anyone actually record an indoor cycle without having to use other workout? Many thanks

May 5, 2015 8:26 AM in response to Winston Churchillby hawkwood,I verified that using "other" does record the indoor cycle session exercise as activity, but just because that is how it current works, does not mean that is how it SHOULD work. @jul22 I think this is a software bug, not a physical defect in the watch, so a replacement would exhibit the same results. Correcting this will take a software update.

May 8, 2015 4:36 AM in response to hawkwoodby elabid,The first Spin class I went to, it didn't record any exercise. I went to the Apple store, and they didn't know why. I didn't have my iPhone with me and bluetooth on in the spin class. So they told me go back and try it with the phone and bluetooth on. So I went to my next spin class. It recorded the entire class as exercise, but not my heart rate. Apparently, my heart rate was not being recorded for the past day. I powered my watch off and on, and the heart rate started to work again. So in class today, I got the watch on, got my phone, got the heart rate working and 50 minutes of class recorded as 18 minutes. This is very frustrating. I am just wondering now how can I trust anything on the activity app.

May 8, 2015 7:29 AM in response to elabidby Winston Churchill, and 50 minutes of class recorded as 18 minutes.
I believe that's because you are moving your wrist for part of the event.

May 8, 2015 8:04 AM in response to John-75by Winston Churchill,How is it calculating speed (pace) and distance - but not registering it as exercise?
They are 2 different apps, but I don't think it's working as I would expect either.

Swinging your arm on a treadmill for several minutes without stopping isn't easy, indeed it's dangerous and suggest you don't try it, however it will record exercise, probably just didn't do it enough.

May 8, 2015 8:21 AM in response to Winston Churchillby elabid,I was thinking it was because of the jumping on the bike. For 5 minutes we did 50 seconds down, 10 seconds up, and then 40/20, 30/30 etc. Another time, we did for a song get up to climb and back to seat repetitively 10-20 times, break and then again. and a few other exercises like that. So I am guessing, that the next spin class, I should just choose other?

May 8, 2015 8:28 AM in response to elabidby Winston Churchill,I actually don't think the watch is all that great for things like spinning, if you use the indoor cycling setting you won't get a proper reading for exercise time, if you use 'other' your workout is based on a brisk walk for things like calories.

May 8, 2015 9:22 AM in response to Winston Churchillby hawkwood,Thank you for letting us know the work-arounds of swinging your arms and using "other" in Workout app. I think we are now giving examples of how it "should" work, and our discontent at how it does work. If the Workout app has an option for indoor stationary activities, then going to the effort of using those should count towards our "Exercise" goal in the Activity app, like it does when using "other".

Agreed
like it does when using "other".
Ideally they should work a bit better than 'Other' and learn when to pause, so that one doesn't need to manually pause it.

May 8, 2015 2:48 PM in response to hawkwoodby molly_sp,What I have noticed is that for most exercise types in the Exercise App, I do not get "full" credit in the Activity App. I ALWAYS get full credit if I log exercise type "other", however. I noticed this after using a stair stepper and logging it under "stair stepper", which gave me very little credit and suggested I had burned something like 49 calories after 30 minutes on the stepper. Right. Now I log everything under "other" and much of the time I also use a heart rate monitor on a strap, paired to the watch. That works beautifully! I get credit for every minute and every calorie, and the heart rate is super accurate. Note that I do not NEED the external heart rate monitor to get the credit using "other". It works consistently.
